For certain customers, too big is just big enough. At least that’s Harley-Davidson’s stance with the new S-model Softail Slim and Fat Boy. Here, the S stands for Screamin’ Eagle. As in the 110ci CVO-based engine finally fitted to a pair of mainline Softail models. This is the first time the SE mill is available outside of the CVO models. More inches, more torque, that’s the story. Harley claims 109 pound-feet of torque in these applications, harnessed by a six-speed trans to pummel the rear tire.

And good news for those of you planning to take your new Softail on a long highway haul. For the first time ever, electronic cruise control is available as standard equipment on 2016 Heritage Softail Classic, Softail Deluxe, Fat Boy S and Softail Slim S models and available as an accessory for all other 2016 Softail models.

The bobber-style Softail Slim takes the simple approach, with a chopped rear fender, thick fork legs covered in blacked-out shrouds, and machined highlights on the gloss-black engine. The Hollywood bar—with moderate rise and pullback—works with floorboards for a traditional Softail riding position. There’s a single disc at each wheel. Colors are Vivid Black or Olive Gold Denim with military-inspired tank graphics.

“While the Olive Gold paint and star graphic are reminiscent of the WLA military models Harley-Davidson built during World War II, the Softail Slim S pays homage to the post-war chop-ups made from those bikes after the war,” says Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Director of Styling. “Those garage customs started the bobber era that continues to inspire our styling team today.”

The Fat Boy S also follows an accustomed form with disc wheels, a valanced rear fender, and, in the S, extensive black-out effects, from the big headlight down to the two-into-two exhaust. “When we started styling the Fat Boy S we took it completely black, and then we pulled it back a little until our gut told us it was right,” says Richards. “We kept the highlights on the wheels and the tank badge, but this is still the darkest Fat Boy ever.” Colors are Vivid Black or Denim Black.

MSRP for the Softail Slim S ranges from $18,499 to $18,899 (ABS and cruise is standard). The Fat Boy S lists at $19,899 to $20,999, also with standard ABS and cruise. We’re still waiting for final specs for these and other 2016 Harley models, and will be riding them come Monday. Stay tuned for more.
